So you want to go to art school? Below is a list of ten of the top undergraduate visual art schools in the United States, in no particular order. If you are interested in going to an art school, do the research to get to know each school more intimately. Each art school has a unique flavor and personality and is very expensive, so take some time to figure out who you are and where you want to go.
A couple of good ways to evaluate an art college is by looking at the list of visiting artists and alumni. The caliber of artists visiting the school say a lot about the reputation and personality of the school and how much the school is willing to give back to its student population. The quality of alumni allows a college to move forward as it invests in its own students and is ultimately paid back by the quality of the alumni.

The Cranbrook Academy of Art is a small private college near Detroit that takes an artistic community approach to its education, through students sharing their work in the school's gallery. It serves approximately 150 students every year, making it a very small school. It is highly ranked by U.S. News and World Report, placing fourth in the 2008 fine arts schools rankings. It has the highest-ranked fiber arts program in the nation and the second-highest-ranked graphic design and ceramics programs in the nation. 2. Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, Rhode Island
The Rhode Island School of Design is a 4-year private college serving over 2,400 students in Providence, Rhode Island. The school was ranked the number one fine arts school in 2008 by U.S. News & World Report and number one in a number of specific programs, including interior design, graphic design and glass art. The iconic bronze lions who guard the main entrance of Chicago's Art Institute now have one more reason to be proud.
The Art Institute of Chicago has been voted the top U.S. museum -- and third most popular museum worldwide -- in Trip Advisor's Travelers' Choice Attractions awards, in which readers rank their favorites "based on the quality and quantity of traveler reviews of attractions" featured on the site, according to a statement reported by Crain's.
The 1-million-square-foot museum, which is second in size among U.S. art museums to only the Metropolitan Museum of Art, was lauded in the ranking for housing "beautiful art from all periods" in a building that "itself is art."
Rounding out the top three in the ranking are the Frick Collection in New York and the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.

In addition, the Art Institute of Chicago has earned props for its ambitious, Chicago Innovation Award-winning Modern Wing, unique programming -- such as the current "Impressionism, Fashion, and Modernity" exhibition and an affiliated T-shirt design contest cosponsored by Threadless -- and its forward-thinking use of technology, such as its new-this-year Tours app.
The museum's Thorne Miniature Rooms are another of the museum's many beloved features.
