From its founding in 1965, until joining The Art Institutes system of schools in 1978, The Art Institute of Houston was known as the Houston School of Commercial Art. In July 2011 the school relocated to its current facility at 4140 Southwest Freeway, Houston, TX 77027.

The Art Institute of Houston- North – is one of The Art Institutes, a system of more than 40 educational institutions located throughout North America, providing education in design, media arts, fashion and culinary arts.
Established in 2008, The Art Institute of Houston- North is a branch campus of The Art Institute of Houston [1], which was founded in 1965 as the Houston School of Commercial Art and joined The Art Institutes system of schools in 1978 [2].
Located at 10740 North Gessner Drive in Houston, Texas, The Art Institute of Houston-North is one of four locations of The Art Institutes system located in Texas and is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) [3].
The Art Institutes system is a subsidiary of Education Management Corporation, which is headquartered in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
