Overview

At the New York Film Academy, students receive comprehensive instruction in the aesthetics, techniques, and business of photography through hands-on, experiential assignments while learning to use state-of-the-art technology, equipment and software. Our MFA, One Year Conservatory and Short Term Workshops are designed both for students beginning their education in photography and for those interested in augmenting skills to advance their careers.

Photography by Alexandra Wolf Photography is an art form, a way of seeing the world; it’s also the most popular hobby on the planet. But great art can only be created through the vision of an artist who has mastered the broad technical and aesthetic challenges that require every photographer to make dozens of split-second decisions about shutter speed, aperture, ISO, composition, focal length, gesture, and the precise moment of exposure when capturing a photograph. At the New York Film Academy, these decisions become instinctual through the intensive instruction provided by our celebrated faculty of award-winning industry professionals and through intensive, hands-on practice. Leveraging a network of working photographers, editors, publishers, curators, and potential employers, students are exposed to the entire ecosystem of professional photography and will be prepared to enter it with the confidence that can only come from firsthand experience.

His friends thought he was mad when Iqbal K Mohamed decided to quit work as a big time photographer and made up his mind to set up his photography school in one of the world's 14 hot spots — the Nilgiris district. Situated 6,500 ft above sea-level on a mountain-top, the Light and Life Academy (supported by Kodak) is India's first professional photography institute. It offers both short-term workshops and long-term courses. Now, starting September, LLA will launch its four-year course in professional photography for students straight out of school. 

"India always needed something like this, but there was nowhere to go. My programme works on what's needed for our country," said Iqbal, an alumnus of Brooks Institute of Photography, California. 

Spread over four acres, LLA has seven fully-equipped studios, accessories and grip equipment, a daylight studio with picture windows and a one-hour mini lab. Apart from teaching students everything they need to know about photography, LLA also offers courses in website designing, pre-press and offset printing and even lab technology. 

Iqbal used to live in Bangalore and Mumbai before he went to Nilgiris to establish LLA. "This was like a higher calling and I tell you, it feels good," says the 39-year-old professional. Thanks to the time he spent at Brooks, some of the world's best photographers now come as guest faculty to Ooty. "I also go to the US often and that's helped me. Most people think of photography as just wedding photography. They don't realise that the scope is only increasing day by day." 

So it's understandable that more popular than the two-year course at LLA have been the hobby and fashion workshops. "There are a lot of people coming to attend our workshops. In fact, one of the people who visited LLA was a top photographer at National Geographic." All the way in Ooty? "Why not? It's one of the 14 hot spots in the world. And have you ever known sadhus to go to beaches? My place is one hour away from Karnataka or Kerala and you have wonderful photo-ops out here."
